Our Story

our-story-2

Step back to the late 1800s, a time of bold dreams and determination. A passionate young local, denied entry to the horse racetrack by the British rulers, decided not to back down. Instead, he crafted a daring plan that would leave an indelible mark on history. Just outside the very grounds that is now the Galle International Cricket Stadium, he built an architectural marvel—his personal VIP viewing spot. This building wasn't just any structure; it showed his strong spirit and courage, and today, it stands as a symbol of strength and bravery, reminding us of when one man's boldness changed everything.

Fast forward to the early 20th century, this very building became the inspiration for J.L. Pimanda, a visionary amidst the bustling activity of Galle Harbor to commence his dream. As World War I soldiers and sailors from across the globe, docked in Galle, He recognized their need for solace and camaraderie. In 1921, he established the Sydney Hotel, a bar named in honor of the many ships arriving from Sydney, Australia. This welcoming haven quickly became a hub of laughter, stories, and lasting connections, weaving itself into the rich fabric of Galle's history.

The word 'Tsunami' may sound soothing, but for Sri Lankans, it brings memories of pain and loss. The Galle Bus Stand captured the world's attention when the 2004 tsunami struck, as it resulted in significant loss of life and widespread destruction. On that fateful Boxing Day, which coincided with a Poya holiday, the Sydney Hotel was closed, sparing it from immediate operation during the disaster. However, situated right behind the bus stand, the hotel’s ground floor was inundated by the massive wave. Amidst the chaos, rescue operations for survivors began from the first floor. Bed sheets were repurposed as makeshift ropes, allowing those trapped to climb to safety. Despite the severe damage to its interior, the façade of the building remained intact. Remarkably, the bar recovered swiftly from this deadly hangover and resumed operations in January 2005, showcasing its resilience and community spirit
